POLIANGOLAR ® : broaching attachments with a hunting, rotary motion

WHAT IT DOES The poliangolar is a simple, easily operated attachment, which produces blind or through holes of either regular or irregular polygons with sharp or chamfered edges. The attachment operates with a hunting rotary motion which, in addition to standard hexagonal and square holes, can also produce star-shaped, rectangular, trapezoidal, torx, grooves and other special profiles. Correct operation of the poliangolar will produce accurate prismatic holes having perfect sharp edges. The broaching operation can be successfully performed on a variety of materials including steel, brass, aluminium and other alloys. Profiles can also be cut on hard woods and Plexiglas. Machining times are very short: i.e. for a 17mm hexagon, 20mm deep, in hard steel it would take between 15 and 20 seconds.HOW IT WORKS Poliangolar IMMAGINE 1The tool’s spindle is mounted in the attachment’s body with a specific angular orientation to give the tool a hunting rotary motion. In the case of broaching a regular polygon a pre hole (having a slightly bigger diameter than the internal form) should be drilled before starting the operation, whereas in the case of a irregular polygon a pre slot (slightly smaller than the shape that has to be formed) should be made. Holes of different sizes or shapes can be successfully cut by simply replacing the tools, which should have the same section as the desired hole. The poliangolar is so easy to use because no templates or fixtures are required for its efficient and precise results.

HOW IT IS MADE Immagine 3The attachment is made of a hardened and tempered steel body that is attached to the machine by means of a hardened tempered shank. The tool spindle runs on highly precise bearings designed to withstand both axial and radial thrusts. The simplicity and robustness of the body ensure that the poliangolar has a long lifetime and a rarely breaks down.

ON WHICH MACHINES The poliangolar can be easily and readily installed on a wide variety of machine tools, either as a complete cycle or a second operation. The attachment is particularly useful when used on automatic or semiautomatic lathes for producing square or hexagonal socket head screws and studs in small or medium production runs. When mounted on the tailstock or on the turret of a capstan lathe, the attachment can produce the finished part without requiring subsequent operations. The poliangolar can also be used on transfer machines, milling machines and drilling machines, where it provides an easy method for cutting polygonal profiles on work holding fixtures and dies. The pictures show attachments fitted to traditional and CNC machine tools. For the most difficult machining tasks, it is recommended that the dragging lever is installed, whenever possible. (The lever is always provided in a wooden box together with the poliangolar). In the event that it is impossible to mount the dragging lever on the machine, the production of the pieces will still be possible, although some different methods will be required; these methods can be found in the poliangolar’s instruction manual. In the event that you are unsure on the best course of action we will of course, be glad to help you and advise you on the best possible solution for your need. The attachments are available with a variety of shanks, both standard and special, click on “technical details” to see the available shanks and their delivery times.

HOW TO USE THE SUPPLIED LEVER Utilizzo Levetta The attachment is supplied with a dragging lever giving a certain angular position to the polygonal figure. This lever should be used whenever cutting deep slots or “non standard” shapes in order to prevent the tool from screwing up as a result of driving friction of the bearings and seals. The lever should be leant against any stop device which in the lathe will be integral with the chuck and with the workpiece itself; whereas in the drilling or milling machines it will be secured to the clamping device.
